sir,

I have the honour to acknowledge
the receipt of your telegram of the 24th. ultimo, stating
that you would be glad to receive as soon as possible my
views on the subject of the continued provision of a
British dollar for use in the China trade which views Sir
Ernest Satow in a Despatch to Lord Lansdowne of the 26th.
June, 1905, suggested I should lay before you.
I have also
Fox
to confirm my telegram of the 25th. ultimo, stating that I

was averse to the re-establishment of a Mint in Hongkong.
I regret the delay that has occur-'
-red in dealing with the Despatch above referred to, but
the subject is a difficult one and in the press of other
business I have hitherto found it impossible to give to it
the consideration which its importance deserves.
